Elmer the Elephant – Mosaic Art

Although we’ve seen glimpses of Spring here in Chicago, it did actually snow here a couple days ago. So, we decided to pull out our Elmer in the Snow book and add some color to our day!

I’m not sure if you’ve read any of the Elmer series books, but we love that it sends the message that different is GOOD and beautiful, teaching children not to try and be like anyone but themselves. Just be you! I created an Elmer Art template for my boys to color with either paint, oil pastels, markers, crayons, etc. Both my 6 year old and 4 year old enjoyed this activity! Plus, it took some time, so I was able to get a few things down in the meantime. I’ll take that as a win-win!

Above was my 4 year old’s final masterpiece! He absolutely LOVES all things art related…play dough, painting, stickers, chalk, making jewelry…you name it, he enjoys it!

I love when they have their “serious” working faces on. It shows me how focused they are, taking pride in their creations.

It’s really fun to start an art activity by reading aloud a favorite children’s book. This helps bring something to life and stir their imaginative ideas! From Where the Wild Things Are to any of Eric Carle’s books or Dr. Seuss stories, there are an abundance of choices you can pair with an art activity!

If your child isn’t quite into painting, you can try offering oil pastels like these! They are similar to crayons but a more vibrant color and smoother texture. Crayons and markers work just as great, too! This project can be completed in one sitting, but it certainly can be broken up and split into a few sessions! This is great for practicing fine motor skill development, colors, patterning, and more!

I hope this inspires you to read more books and create some bright and cheerful art! I would love to know what are some of your favorite children’s books?
