Thrifty Thursday: DIY Party Banner

Welcome back to Thrifty Thursday!  Today I’ll be featuring another chalkboard tutorial.  If you missed last week’s MVP frame, see it HERE.

Ethan’s first birthday is right around the corner and I’ve been in decoration mode…full force.  Let’s just say that Pinterest and I have become very close.  It’s actually a tad scary just how much time one can spend in this space. Well, I’ll speak for myself.  The project ideas are endless. But, being a stay at home mom, I’ve had to figure out ways to stay on budget and not break the bank.  After browsing ETSY shops countless times and making trips to Hobby Lobby or Michaels for inspiration, it’s amazing how fast you can burn a hole in your pocket.  So, that’s when I made the decision to DIY.  It can actually be quite therapeutic after a long day, and the best part…..you save a ton of cash!

With a little bit of time…and a glass of wine….
you can accomplish a lot in an hours worth of time.

On tap for this week?

Chalkboard Party Banner

STEP 1
Use a paintbrush to apply Rustoleum’s Chalkboard Paint.
You can create your own banner pieces or purchase them at a craft store!
Allow for 15 – 30 minutes of drying time.
STEP 2
Design/Print the individual letters and cut out.
Flip the page over to the backside and trace the letter with chalk.
I found it easier to trace the outline only instead of the entire paper.
You are trying to avoid excess amounts of chalk.
STEP 3
Now, turn the paper back over and center it.
You can use tape to hold it in place for better accuracy.
Use a pencil to trace the entire outline and all details.  Press firmly.
When you are finished, you will see a faint chalk outline beneath.
STEP 4
Use a Chalk-Ink Pen (purchase HERE or HERE) to trace over the chalk outline.
The best part about Chalk-Ink is that you can make designs COLORFUL.
These pens come in a variety of colors that will suit any of your needs.
Remember…you aren’t limited to white.
To fix mistakes or erase smears/smudges, use a damp towel.
The ink dries quickly and remains semi-permanent, unless affected by water.
Follow the same steps for each letter.  Once finished, choose any color
scrapbook paper of your choice and use for the background.
I chose red against black since it really seems to pop.
To hang, use a one hole punch and some colored string.
There you have it, a quick & easy party banner!
