Thrifty Thursday: Thanksgiving tradition

Welcome Back to Thrifty Thursday!
Thanksgiving one holiday that is quickly getting overlooked.  With the impending arrival of Christmas, it’s very easy for Thanksgiving to get pushed under the blanket.  It’s kind of sad because it means that rather than focusing on all that we are grateful for and blessed to have, our time is spent on scouring the internet for upcoming deals, putting up the tree and other festive decorations, all the while consumerism takes over our lives!
Thanksgiving isn’t just one day.  It is something we should live throughout the year.  BUT, the day we celebrate is one spent with loved ones over a delicious feast and some good ole football on the tube!Nothing beats the vast array of food that is enjoyed, from casseroles to stuffing to all types of pie.
Looking back throughout the years, I have to say that this holiday has produced some of the most memorable times in my childhood.  To me, carrying on traditions is so important. Whether they are big or small, it’s something that leaves a lasting imprint.  As a child growing up, there was a family tradition we participated in every single Thanksgiving.
Each member of our family would write what they were thankful for that year on a slip of paper.  On the back they would write their name and year.  My mom would collect all of them and store them in a sealed envelope.  Over the years, we would go back and read the previous years’ slips and all the ones prior.  We would laugh.  We would tear up.  We would remember.
We would remember the hardships we endured together as a family. We would remember the funny little stories that are often forgotten.  We would remember the things we overcame.  We would remember the accomplishment made and goals that were met!
So, to continue on with this tradition, I decided to create a new kind of slip that can be used each and every Thanksgiving.  Whether you adorn your table with fancy place cards or cutesy name cards, these will serve a double purpose.  On one side, you can write the guest or family member’s name to sit on the plate or rest upon a pinecone for some festive flare.  On the backside, so everyone else around the table can see, you will write what you are thankful for!  This will hopefully create discussion around the table and promote conversation about what you were grateful for this year!
When it’s time to clean up, you simply put your card in the envelope and write the year on the bottom.  Each year, you can go back and revisit the old ones.  Let me tell you, it’s really fun to read the slips I wrote in elementary school all the way through college.  You sure do get a kick out of them! Another way to use these cards is for food tents!  If you need something extra to top your table, then simply write in the food item and place it near the platter!
One side says, “Gobble Til You Wobble” and the other side has a frame to write whatever you choose.  This side can be used as a food label or even as a name card for someone who doesn’t want their “Thankful For” message to be displayed for everyone to read and see!

Please feel free to download the free name card and food tent template below.  For best quality, print on a heavy card stock or 80# paper:

I sure hope you decide to carry on your favorite family traditions or start some new ones this year.  Since you now know one of mine, I’m quite curious….
What are some family traditions you participate in during the Thanksgiving Holiday?  I would love to hear all about yours!
