Top of the List Tuesday: Children’s books

Being a teacher for eight years, Read Aloud quickly became my favorite time of the school day! The excitement, wonder, and curiosity on kids’ faces made the experience so enjoyable.  Over time, I’ve fallen in love with a plethora of books for a variety of reasons.  Now that I have a child of my own, I’m constantly looking for new selections that will bring about the same feelings of delight that I witnessed with my students.   As I often peruse bookstore shelves, I find myself looking at the same “best sellers” and “recommended” books. While these are wonderful, enriching books, I’m seeking ones that really pique my interest… whether it be through charming illustrations or clever plots and story lines.  I’ve chosen five books that currently top my list! Regardless of age, kids can relate to these…whether it’s read before bedtime, reminds them of a pet, is shared during the holidays, or simply brings out the best in their imagination! Even better…most of these are part of a series!
Happy Reading…I thoroughly hope you enjoy them as much as I do!
TOP OF THE LIST:  Five Must Have Children’s Books
This is one of my absolute favorite seasonal books.  Aside from other greats like The Polar Express and The Night Before Christmas, this is one you surely must have. I mean…what’s not to adore? Fantastic illustrations and a witty rhyme scheme will make you turn each page with anticipation.
Wait…it gets better! This book is part of a series, which includes Snowmen at Christmas, Snowmen All Year, Snowmen at Work, and Snowmen at Play!
An entertaining story including alliteration that really grabs your attention (pitter-pat, tip-toe, creep-crawls). The hibernating bear is not as scary as one would think!  This book has a cute, unsuspecting end that will leave you with a smile on your face. There are many other titles in this series, including Bear Says Thanks, Bear Stays Up for Christmas, Bear Feels Scared,
and Bear’s Loose Tooth…..just to name a few!
A great lesson can be learned through the actions of the main character, the little blue truck. Another book containing terrifically, textured illustrations and a unique sequence of events.  Themes of friendship and teamwork are highlighted within this story!  If you are a fan of this, you should also try Little Blue Truck Leads the Way!
What can I say….this is one of a kind!  I find myself going back to reread this book over and over.  Every time I turn a page, you find something new that you hadn’t noticed before.  An extremely creative and innovative way to expose a child to the ABC’s!! It’s all in the details with this one! Want to teach your child about counting too?  No worries…there is 1-2-3 peas!
Looking for the perfect present to give at a baby shower?  Have a birthday coming up and you just don’t know what to get?  Look no further! This book is terrific for any child who likes a great story before bed.  From the adorable pictures to the descriptive and colorful language, your family will love this treasure! Trust me when I say this isn’t your run of the mill alphabet book. Did you say you liked the illustrations? Well, Melissa Sweet is a Caldecott honor winner! I highly recommend that you check out two other books she has done…Little Red Writing and Balloons Over Broadway.
Now it’s your turn, folks…let’s hear your TOP OF THE LIST recommendations!
